Song: Hallucinating Arkansas-Villa Kang

DOWNLOAD: MIXTAPE FILE #16

So because I’ve been slacking on posting on this here beloved music blog, I’ve added the odd number of 11 extra songs to our usual 20 track list per mix tape. I personally love love love this particular compilation as it encapsulates a happy and free sound of summer. At least to me.  Anything marked with an asterisk is on my heavy rotation list, although all of them really are. Expect for a care-free listen and groove. And as always make sure that the download plays it as in the ordered list. It makes all the difference.

Teri Desario - Aint Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You

The soul-eyed sunshine melodies of a disco-era-past tugs on our heartstrings this Memorial Day and we hope it finds you in a similar mood either sunglassed and high-waisted at a smokey backyard BBQ or suncreened and cocktail’ed poolside over a metro-skyline.

Teri Desario humbly began her popular career dabbling as singer/songwriter in the genres of folk and jazz until Bee Gees producer Barry Gibb took noticed and produced her first album Pleasure Train in 1978.  “Aint Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You” was the album’s first hit single and has since then been a Studio 54 disco mainstay for our dance-pop reminiscing.

Commence daytime dance party sess … nnnnow.  Top up or topless, do so for our mutual amusement.  Thanks.

Stereolab - Neon Beanbag (Atlas Sound Southern Baptist Remix)

But now, on the other hand, we need some sunshine.
We need to have some sunshine sometimes.
Sometime, it can be too much rain.

Originally from their 2008 4AD release Chemical Chords, Stereolab’s “Neon Beanbag” gets the remix treatment from Atlas Sound, the solo project of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox.  Released in conjunction with and in promotion of the 4AD LP, the remix featured this Memorial Day preambles itself with a sampled Baptist sermon of sunshine and rain.  And though we at the Mixtape Files are not of the religious sort, I can not contend with the sermon’s final notion that we need to be happy sometimes.  Filled with hand-claps and do-do-baps atop twinkling instrumentation, the track lifts upward onto blissfulness.  Amen.

Secondly, available is another multi-phonic rework revisited by Bradford for the 2010 Stereolab album NotMusic, the B-side companion to Chemical Chords. It’s hardly a contender for those of you who swoon helplessly to the beauteous sing-song vocals of Laetitia Sadler, but it is nonetheless a worthy listen for those aurally fixated on Cox’s spacey, OCD soundscapes.  Taste.

Beastie Boys - Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win (Featuring Santigold)

There isn’t much to say about the Beastie Boys that hasn’t been said since the news of Adam “MCA“ Yauch’s passing this morning May 4th (on the birthday of late artist Keith Haring, another prolific 80s’ era icon).  Sadly, there are some fights that you just can’t win, but we are nonetheless thankful, Adam (and Keith, too), for your contributions, your life, and your commitment to keep on fighting.

And in a fashion be-fitting the artists’ we love, we celebrate your life through the work you’ve left us.

Rest in Peace. You will continue to be missed.

Check out the full length, 11-minute Director’s cut of “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win“ that reunited the trio with legendary director Spike Jonze and immortalizes the Beastie Boys and Santigold in action figure form. Yeah, you heard me. Check it out: Here.

RIP MCA

Sadness.

Rest in Power.

Beastie Boys MC Adam Yauch, aka MCA, has passed away due to cancer, TMZ reports. He was 47 years old.

The Beastie Boys are one of the most important and influential hip-hop groups of all time. They were instrumental in making hip-hop a global, mainstream force. Formed in 1981 as a hardcore band, they combined punk and rap into a singular sound that grew increasingly broad over the years, encompassing a vast array of genres. Yauch, Michael Diamond (Mike D), and Adam Horowitz (Ad-Rock) released several classic albums, including their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986, 1989′s Paul’s Boutique, and 1994′s Ill Communication.

High Places - Sonora (Official Music Video)

Directed by Keith Musil, Mary Pearson, singer of the Thrill Jockey duo High places, delivers bloody, face-stomping murders in this official video to “Sonora“.  Bludgeoned and left for dead, Pearson rescues Liars frontman Angus Andrew in bare-knuckle Kill Bill fashion. Yet, as to how and why her arm got that way, I wouldn’t be able to tell you save that it grabs attention when you’re hitching a ride to kick some ass.

From their third LP Original Colors, “Sonora“ is both honorably mentioned here and appears on our latest mixtape for its minimal techno dance beats and vocal buoyancy.

Benoit & Sergio - Corinne (Metronomy Cover)

I take this pain in my heart
for just one more night with you
If they let me back in the forces
And I could lay my hand on you

From Metronomy’s 2010 English Riviera LP, “Corinne“ gets four times the attention in the album’s 2012 remix edition released last March.  Remixed by Nigh Angles, Leodoris, and Mario Basanov, “Corinne“ received special consideration from our music hording ears with Mixtape favorite Benoit and Sergio’s cover.  Though leading the compilation, the cover by the beguiling, Ghostly International duo hardly qualifies as a remix, but you’ll get no complaints from us as the cover fills with grooving electro-pop sensibilities.  Yummers.

Soft Kill - Within This Mess

Death Rock.  When a genre such as this comes across my desk, I lean back, huff an anguished sigh and furrow the proverbial brow thinking, “What the hell does that really mean, anyway?“ So, I close my eyes and think of all the harrowing things that could possible entail: Bleached skin? (Ow.) Leather pants or something or other? (Ok. One ticket to the sex-and-pain gravy train, please.) Metallic tats? (Ew. Deal Breaker.) And David Lynch movies? (Hell, yes!)

When Toby Graves and now-wife Shiloe Alia met, a conversation of the musically-inclined began. At some point between the Cure and the Killing Joke, seeds were sown, and with their 2011 Fast Weapons debut An Open Door, we at the Mixtape Files blissfully reap the benefits.  Incorporating dark, Interpol-reminiscent tones, vocal growls, and heavy instrumentation, the 9 track LP is an “open dialogue love letter in song form“.

So, save this for the black light or play it atop a bed of black roses.

Bear in Heaven - Idle Heart

She’s a long gone Demerol
She’ll make you forget
Something about the time

From their third studio release I Love You It’s Cool, Brooklyn-based Bear in Heaven construct upbeat synth-pop indie gems once tackled by such outfits as Helio Sequence and the Ruby Suns.  Richly textured in electro-melodies and distorted vocals, Bear in Heaven, originally a solo project by now-frontman John Philbot, streamed this and the entire LP I Love You It’s Cool on their website prior to its release at a notable 400,000% slower.  Annoying as that may have been to those eager to catch a listen after their well-received 2009 second album Beast Rest Forth Mouth, it kept our interest enough to check back there and again, and we’re thankful that our patience has born fruit worth savoring for this third venture’s tight production and dense neo-psychedelia.

Though dense as it may be, “Idle Heart“ kicks off the LP.  It sends us pensively floating, and as to when and where we’ll finally touch down then after, who knows?  And who ultimately cares?
