Ben Gibbard - Set Yourself on Fire (Stars Cover)
For those who were enthralled with the Postal Service, the mega-pop triumvirate of Jimmy Tamborello (“Dntel”), Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, and begged for that second album (that never was), the 3rd full release of Arts & Crafts’ Stars ambitiously took on that infectious indie pop sound and incorporated their own elements of guitar hooks and chamber pop. Entitled Set Yourself on Fire, the LP was a near-perfect pop album with its quirky charisma and quiet grandeur.
Originally intended for the album’s remix/ cover LP Do You Trust Your Friends?, Ben Gibbard’s rendition of “Set Yourself on Fire” tightens any vocal comparisons between the Death Cab crooner himself and Stars’ frontman Torquil Campbell. Though lacking the manic instrumentation of the original, Gibbard’s rough draft of this un-mastered rendition still wallflowers pensively on its own, satisfying a quiet heart with slivers of sweet saccharine chanties.
