Arches - This Isnt a Good Night for Walking

From the self-released debut LP Wide Awake, Philly-based duo Arches captures our sweet affections on this uncharacteristically cool spring evening.

On the LP:

This is a concept album about a character who lives alone in a city. Mundane routines drive the character to flee the city and become a drifter. The character’s perspective of reality becomes convoluted with memories and current travels to the point where the character becomes unable to decipher past and present experiences.

With both Julien Greenberg (guitar/ bass) and Tom Herman Jr. (guitar/ piano) on vocals and support from Kevin Kearney on drums, this concept LP of wanderlust and memory kick-start with “This Isnt a Good Night for Walking”.  Despite the correlations to the popular indie outfit Grizzly Bear and the clamor and coons of duo We Are Trees, the Arches melodious near-incantations coupled with the simple, yet multi-phonic, instrumentation distinctly beckon, calling a wayward wanderer to somewhere and anywhere (but here).

Although it may not be a good night for walking, it may be time to go anyway.  And off we go.

Count down, and after one, there is indefinitely a zero.

Coming ‘round, the circle finds us back at the beginning and the air that fills when you return is faintly familiar.  And struggling with the dissonant notions of why you left to begin with and what brings you back, you let loose a tired sigh relieved in the solace that it’s somehow fated and the di rolls as it can and should.

So, we pass Go. Collect our recompense. And start again.

A beginning starts with an end with this new, yet old, mixtape, #0.  Definitively the last in a chain of intimate mixtapes, it’s shared here on our neurotic pages so you may revel in our sentimental soundscape while new tender morsels await in the days ahead.

Birthed in the City of Sin for want of a familiar bedfellow and the flickering disco’ed dark, #0 is a coalescence of avant remixes, dubs, minimalism, and nu disco; an aural escape where need finds solace in noise.

Enjoy.

Fairewell - Born Under a Bad Sign (Echo Lake Remix)

Download: the mixtape file #17 (part 2)

The strumming, indie-pop other half to Mixtape #17, Part 2 takes along the same cacophonous mentality into the daylight. A playlist to cap off that summertime disco/ hipster romp with an ol’ time 90’s classic to finish you.

From what I hear, it’s going to be a scorcher this weekend in Los Angeles. Best advice: Less layers, more skin. (wink)

Four Visions - Sparked Fire

You’re an awful beautiful disaster.

The airy incantations and acoustical harmonies of Four Visions is the solo bedroom project of Brooklyn resident Daniel Abary. Though easily categorized as another Grizzly Bear suggestive artist like Philadelphia’s Arches and Virginia’s We Are Trees, Abary successfully captivates earfuls with our doting toes tapping. Offering his 7 track EP on Bandcamp for a fee of your choosing, Four Visions debuts with strength, critical composition, and aural sensibility. Promising and on repeat.
