Fanfarlo - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel Cover)

As sentiment seems to be the on-going theme of these most recent post of ours, let us continue to roll with it. Nostalgia is a pleasant feeling on a clear Sunday morning, and it’s worth clenching on to while the blanketed air is still warm and toasty.  There are, in this song and these two bands, memories for me that are either poignant or pacifying; And in remembrance, the scars and predilections fluster fondness.

London-based quintet Fanfarlo create a beautiful homage to the iconic “fuzz-folk”/ psyche-pop of Jeff Magnum and band Neutral Milk Hotel.  Taken from NMH’s 1998 masterwork In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Fanfarlo in a 2009 lap-top acoustic session give a soft breathe of pleasant reminiscence into the LP’s title track maintaining Magnum’s intended soft-heartedness and whimsical melody.

Watch out for that trumpet halfway through and listen for that melodica in the background.  It’s just too much. Too much, I tellz ya!!

Fanfarlo - Shiny Things (Official Video)

Though not immediately hot off the digital press, another video release for the highly anticipated Rooms Filled with Light by England’s Fanfarlo demanded a mention upon our schizo-whats-it pages. And when the inspiration beckons, one can’t help but follow, eager and fawning.

Directed by Tim Nackashi, the song’s effervescence of instrumentation, crooning vocals, and ballerinas is quite literally a toe-tapping face-melter whilst poignantly satirizing the capitalization of age, artistry, and ambition.

Following their ‘09 release Reservoir, Fanfarlo gives a second go at amazingness with their second LP Rooms Filled With Light, due out February 28th. Their nebulous and effecting chamber pop earned them an enthusiastic acclamation for their perfect cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” (Download and view the post: Here) as well as an official billing in this year’s Coachella Music Festival (View the splendiferous line-up: Here). Suffice to say, were clearly ape-tit, going, and happy to await our objects of sweet affections on stage, ready to entertain us.

Emerging from London, England in the mid 2000’s from a series of singles and several YouTube’ed acoustic sessions, the quintet comprising of Simon Balthazar (vocals), Cathy Lucas (violin and vocals), Mark West (guitar), Leon Beckenham (trumpet), Justin Finch (bass) and Amos Memon (drums) akin their sound, reasonably so, to indie pop acts like Zach Condon’s Beirut, the Arcade Fire, and the National. Notably compelling and filled with bombastic chamber pop fervor, Fanfarlo effortlessly scores in our book.

Point. Match.
