UPDATE 01/17/12:

Cloudy Sundays seem to always emit a nostalgic air, and while most of us who know better are licking their wounds from an evening of fun times and music, others of us wide-eyed and bushy tailed traverse through the empty street and highways listening to soft, long-ago melodies.

Mixtape File #1, set loose last year about this time, marked the beginning of our now year-long rant of what moves us and shakes us.  And a little over year since the inception, our voices in our heads still chatter and the music still plays loud and often to shut them all the hell up.     

Yet stepping onto memory lane, it seemed fitting to make some necessary adjustments to a half-assed posting.  Tagged appropriately and slipping in a photo to inspire you, we thank you for following.

The Mixtape File #5: Download.

Shame on living for being so damn strenuous with asinine online courses, work (or lack there of), wacky Miami gallivanting, awkward sexual frustratings, and sundown to dawn LA nightlifing. Sigh. Hard life. Retrograde? Tough shit.

Yet, it’s finally here.  Our Mixtape #5 went through several incarnations through the course of March starting as a dreary ides of sad bastard folkishness and lip-biting grooves, to a house heavy, Ultra-enthused feet trampler to finally this upbeat, toe-tapping indie collection.

How this came to be the final rendition I can sincerely say is due to the people that revolve in my universe and the idea that a mixtape, when done in this frequency, should essentially be a timepiece marking a point of existence, a period of living.

Suffice to say, everything’s alright. Well, it’s as close to alright as weirdness will allow anyway. Merp.

The Mixtape File #7: Download.

 Undeniably, music has a profoundly evocative quality to it.  At any given moment, as you stroll through a busy broadway, the mere snippet of a tune of either your own making or some schmo on the street can spark anything from reminiscences to dance to tears, and it’s an idea that’s ultimately beautiful but also frightening.  This seventh addition of our Mixtapes files is a personal exploration on that notion that I’m willing to share with you.   

Though we are proned to our own bouts of masochism and immerse ourselves in sad bastard music pontifications as to whether What came first? The music or the misery?, the melodies and beats we surround ourselves aren’t so solely pigeon-holed in tears and fears.  The original draft was a great deal of ambient and electronic instrumentation under lulled vocals; completely “dear diary”.  Though it came out to be pretty awesome, it was certainly more self-serving than share-worthy. What took its place instead is an aural documentation of a drowning state breaking surface to catch air …

I know. It sounds as if it might be a Debbie Downer soundtrack, but I swear it isn’t. I like happy endings too.  And there is one. Promise.

This afternoon, we hope to save you from a rant on some hyperbolic theme but leave last month with the recrudescent notion that we are the architects of our reality - what we decide to either construct and deconstruct or occur and reoccur is in part of our own design.  Where all things in creating is birthed from our own imaginings, it is ultimately what you make of it.

Neither the debaucherous dance party nor the downtrodden’s sappy savior, Mixtape File #9 is a chilled dream and a shoe-gazing trip, to say it simply.  The beats are catchy but reserved; danceable but tight-lipped.  It wallflowers unassumingly at the sidelines and for this month’s timepiece, it fits perfectly into our 3/4 summer of random encounters, new loves and hazy memories.

Yes.  Neil Young is still very much alive.  And No.  Tribute albums are not just for dead people.  And tracks like these are good for hot summer nights.  So, slip on something meshed and light (as long as you look sexy in it), and play this cool track to ice the sweat off your shoulders.

Released by Universal Electricity (aka the band Vacation), Teen Daze’s “Harvest Moon” is one in a 14 track cover compilation to Neil Young.  Headed for the Ditch: a Tribute to Neil Young is dreamy anti-folk collection of emerging artists like Mixtape favorite Foxes in Fiction, Emily Reo, Ghost Animal, and Breakfast in Fur.  A little experimentation, some chillwave, and analog psychodelic, this LP beautifully pays homage to the gentle folk and prolific lyricism of its subject.

Largely, music is a form of escape for a lot of us; a mode to which to step out of ourselves and experience without direct context.  To deal with our thoughts and our schizo-whatsits through notes and emotion in the hopes that what’s transpiring beyond us will subsequently resolve itself.  So we ride it.

Ultimately, that luxury is simply that and the reality of our conditions presents itself: life and death; peace and strife; retention and loss; submission and aversion; Integration and division. And when it does, where do you stand? How do you proceed?

This month’s ending mixtape is neither an exploration of these ideas nor a resolution of that mindset.  Yet, the photo left here for your viewing is.  Look long and look closer.
